Study
and Try to Translate
Former Premier Zhu's Poem
In
the internet <sohu.com>, it's June 28th,2001 to read
Premier Zhu's poem for the first time entiltd My Impression
of Revisiting the West Hunan with Good Memories of the Donting
Lakeside written in Spring,March 2001. His manuscript was
written on a piece of spercial paper with the Chinese chatacters:
Tsinghua University. On such a day there were 417 commentaries
contrubuted by internet pen pals. And the echo to his poem
was so great and so strong that no other poem or essay was
a match for it. Some say “Premier Zhu is a true man with
talent and wisdom”, others say “It is not easy to be a good
premier.I am so moved that I cannot help weeping”; and still
another, writing a poem to appraise him like this :“At late
dusk in springtime the winter wind is in emergency. / Who
is to keep you company? / At a peaceful atmosphere of singhing
and dancing, / no one knows your own hard-working feeling.”In
addition, the following are some quotations from pen pals
of the same internet.
“His personality charm is so great that we should be lucky
to have such a premier and senior scholar as our good example.”“He
is a true man, we hope you guide our historical way and you
are respectable and beliable to serve for our Chinese nation.”“Both
of your poem and calligraphy are of excellent works. However,
I prefer to love his handwriting rather than his poem.”“My
friends and I are sure that as one of top leaders, Premier
Zhu is the most admirable for he is of probity and justice
and he has a good command of economics. It is necessary for
us to have such a leader.”“His poem is good enough to be
a text in our Textbook of Chinese.”“Premier Zhu's poem left
me vehement doleful impression with modesty and true affection.
Seeing the poem means seeing the poet.”“His poem is full
of wisdom, justice, charm and hope. I wish more great leaders
like Premier Zhu would emerge in China's history.”“Premjier
Zhu is of good quality. As a good premier, he seems to be
China's backbone or mainstay with hope.”“The poem mirrors
the poet.”and so on.
I'd like to introduce the poem to my American friends when
I read it in the internet. However, I failed to do so for
I was not satified at my version to the poem. I am not sure
my version is perfect to the original text so I dare not e-mailt
it to my friends as fast as I can.Even I had not told my idea
that I wanted to translate the poem into English. As time
goes on, still I have kept on revising my version to the poem, which
took five years in doing so.I often think how to improve my
version. My main consideration is how to win a flash idea
of the version to the original poem instead of just caredul
consideration of the word-for-word way. I hope my version
will be a true poem, too, which is not just an explanation
to the orginal one so that the version ought to be read fluently, rhythmically,
and agreeable with the artistic conception of the original
poem or the poet's flash idea in his mind.Five years later,
I reread my version to his poem, really I found something
necessary to be improved much better.
As a saying goes, “It will take 10 years to sharpen a sword.”
And five years is not long enough to improve my own translating
skills. However, one should not just bow a bow rather than
to throw it at its target. Therefore it is reasonable for
me to try my best to translate it again. As an English saying
goes, “Actions speak lounder than words.”With the encouragement
of my pen pals of the internet, my desire to translate the
poem into English is getting stronger and stronger. Especially
one of my version to a classical Chinese poem was considered
as "the best answer" to translate a well-know Chinese
beautiful lyric, which promoted me to be sure of myself in
translating something else.Meanwhile I have benefited and
learnt much from an international society of poets;some of
my own poems written in English have been published abroad
for more than once, so I have sensed my own ability to translate
or write both in English and in Chinese with the recommendation
of some foreign authorities in poetic circle.
“Ten years taken for sharpening my pen;/ My poems could be
communicated with everyone. / Let my love melt 1,000 years'
snow; / Let my 10,000 roses bloom in red for you./”This is
my own poem written on the exact day that I was told to mail
one of my best poems to be published by a British Press in
New York.I hope I will write or translate much more works
so as to take an active part in the world cultural exchanges, which
is both of my wonderful dream and my great goal for joining
such a noble cause so that I must be conscientious to do what
I like, and I'll never do this in my careless manner. That
is why it has spent me five years translating such a poem
by Premier Zhu, still I dare not publish it to the public.
“Poetry can never be adequately rendered.”Most translators
have no objection to such a point of view that is used to
emphasize how hard to translate poetry. Therefore, perhaps
it is not reasonable for anyone to try to translate poetry
if one is not intended to look for troulbe. However, all the
comments on Premier Zhu's poem were full of true feelings
of readers, and I was so deeply moved by their love and affection
to Premier Zhu that I could not help introducing their solid
remarks to our foreign friends all over the world. Hence,
I have much reasons to climb up such a lofty translating top
even if there are a lot of trouble to wait for me. Simultaneously,
I'd like to take such a way to show my great sympathy to him
for his working hard days and nights. His inaugural speech
by replying reporters' questions are still remembered by the
Chinese people that “No matter which prevents me from marching
forward, a landmine-array or a 10000-meter abyss, I'll be
duty-bound, never to turn back ,and I'll bend myeself to the
people's task and exert myself to the utmost. It was said
that he was not interested in something about his biography
or papers except an English copy of biography, which is a
hint for me to continue to translate his poem into English. That
is a direct reason to render his poem time and again.
The following are his poem with his personal manuscript as
well as my version to his poem.
My
Impression of Revisiting the West Hunan
with Good Memories of the Donting Lakeside
by Zhu Rongji
Spring,March 2001
I left home with my dream sixty years ago;
Still my native land turned uniquely unusual.
Myriad talents graduated from schooling Jishou
as Zhangjiajie's peaks hid heroes being supernatual.
The vigorous people had a new downtown busily go;
However I am disgruntled with the bare and bald hill.
When can I see wave upon wave of the rolling billow?
My dream will not be over if no verdant plants grow.
( Tr. Manfield Zhu)
Notes:(1)Once Premier Zhu laughted at us :“In fact, it is
nearly 60 years that is a little bit greater than the exact
number 57, which meant a poetic exaggeration” And in the
past, Jishou was a capital city of the West Hunan, in which
Ms Laoan (his wife) was a girl student studying in the Schoolgirl
Campus of No.8 State Middle School of Jishou whereas R.J Zhu
studied in the Schoolboy Campus subject to the the same middle
school.
(2)Few travelers knew something about Zhangjiajie as
a wonderful scenic spot before 1980. The great wonder has
been amazingly told since great painter Wu Guanzhong discovered
it in 1979. The wonder is situated in Wuling-Fountainhead
area that is honored to be Human Fairyland, Peach-Origin Shangrila
, No.1 World Wonder-Mountain considered as the typically representative
MT being or spirit. Actually it is a comprehensive miniature
garden or a paradise from which all the oridinal landscape
could be completed. The whole scenic site covers 3,000 unique
and strange peaks at least and more than 800 creeks wandering
along quite different valleys. The whole scenic area is full
of good views, such as limestone caves, forests, lakes, falls
and so on , which left travelers quite different impressions
of them. As a tourist, you may feel strange, wonderful, serene, secluded, wild,
dangerous. Even if you go for a walk along its narrow path,it
is very easy to find “a good view for your every 5 steps,
and even a new sky for another 10 steps”.
(3)bare and bald hill : Usually, there was no vegetation
on the hill with no trees and grass.
(4) disgruntled : not satisfied or not pleased.
(5)wave upon wave...: In the past, his native land was
rich or full of water resource;but nowadays the ecological
balance is lost in some extent. The great Chinese politician,
litterateur Fan Zhongyan (989―1052)wrote a noted inscription
about the Dongting Lake,a few lines of which like this:
It’s the best choice to watch the Dongting Lake scene
In this spectacular region.
With her mouth the great lake holds the remote mountain,
Swallowing the Yanytze River over and over again,
Wave upon wave, rolling on and on,
Reaching the distant end of the heaven.
The morning sun shines but the setting sun in rain...
[Tr. Manfield Zhu]
(6)辛巳[xīn sì] referd to 2001. The Chinese traditional
way to mark a year is to take 22 Chinese characters, two characters
of which can be used to stand for one year different from
the other among 60 years. The 22 characters can be classified
into two kinds: one is called the Heavenly Stems, and the other
is the Earthly Brabches, that is , [I]甲(A),乙(B),丙(C),丁(D),戊(E),己(F),
庚(G),辛(H),壬(I),癸(J),and [II] 子(a),丑(b),寅(c),卯(d),辰(e),巳(f),午(g),未(h),申(i),酉(j),戌(k),亥(l).
If ‘Aa’ stands for 1924, then ‘Bb’ for 1925.And the rest
may be deduced by analogy, for example, if ‘Hf’ represents
2001, then it will represent 2061,and so on and so forth.
10 and 12 as the two digits whose greatest divisor is 60,
so the way used to mark one year different from the other
among 60 years, and then each pair of the two signs will circulate
or reappear after 60 minus 1 years. [ by Manfield Zhu 7701-
