My
Memories of Ancient Heroes
at the Red Cliff
To the Melody of Niannujiao
[Dancing-Girl-Charm]
by Su Shi
(1036-1101)
Rolling
eastward is the Great River,
Cleaning out one hero after another
from year to year.
Near a rampart west side
Stood the Red-Cliff site.
In the Three-Kingdom time, General Zhou had a fight;
The disordered crags jump up to the sky
While frightened billows whipping the riverside,
Wave upon wave, in snowy white.
Such a land with the picture-like sight
Once moved myriad heroes to covet and sigh.
I recalled what
happened to General Zhou
in a smart manner as a hero
Who married Xiaoqiao, a beautiful girl.
And a military genius leisurely waved a feather fan,
Wearing his hat with black silk ribbon,
Talking and laughing at the strong opponent
Destroyed into dust just a moment.
I might be laughed at
My emotional memories of the past
For my hair should not turn gray so fast.
Life is like a dream broken soon.
Let’s drink to the river and moon.
